PermaLinkTranscrpt of Taking Notes interview with Mary Beth Raven and Jeff Eisen
posted Tuesday 30th, January 2007

Anyone who is involved with Lotus technologies should be familiar with the Taking Notes podcasts that Julian Robichaux and Bruce Elgort have been recording regularly for over a year now. Episode 47 (22 January 2007, Monday of Lotusphere) featured an interview with Mary Beth Raven (Lead Product Designer for Notes 8), and Jeff Eisen (Lotus Notes Chief Architect). There is so much great content in this podcast that I wanted to ensure that as many people as possible hear or read what Mary Beth and Jeff had to say. So I've transcribed the podcast (please forgive what I'm sure are at least a few typos). If you haven't had a chance to listen to the podcast, please do take a few minutes and read. There is a wealth of good stuff coming very soon with Notes 8 and these guys do a wonderful and passionate job of describing some of that good stuff. Click below to get the pdf.

Wow, this must have been quite a lot of work. I've been thinking of typing out the one with Damien Katz on couchDb (it's great) - any tips?

Hi Adi,

Gosh, I wish I had some great tips to pass on about transcribing. Basically it was just a lot of time ...listen to a few words or a phrase and type it out, then go to the next phrase, etc., etc. I did break the process up into a few blocks of time over a few days. There's a lot of value to be had in capturing some of these interviews in written form, so I'm hoping to find some decent (and free or inexpensive) software to help with the initial transcription ...hopefully software that will run on linux (specifically Ubuntu).

I think it helps to have a glass of wine handy, and I have confidence that you are more than up to the task.

Have you looked at IBM ViaVoice? see this article http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6383 (the Java dictation client sounds like what you want)

or the hard way...

Thanks for doing the job on Mary Beth's podcast
